Holywood Seed Savers Saturday

On Saturday 7th February the Local Food Group of Holywood Transition Town and the Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens (FCFCG) will host a seed swap event in Camphill Café, Shore Road, Holywood.

It may be cold now, but things are hotting up in the potting shed as gardeners tidy out last year’s old seed collection in anticipation of the longer, lighter days ahead. Most of us don’t manage to empty every pack of seeds or want to grow the same variety this year.  Why not save money and swap them in for a different packet?

Sacha Workman of the Local Food Group – Holywood explained,

“As long as they are valid for the 2015 growing season, swapped seeds can be vegetable or flower, remainders from bought packets or saved from your own plants. You can also bring seed potatoes, seedlings or plants to swap.

Everyone is welcome and those new to gardening or with no seeds to swap will be in the right place. This is a social event where gardeners will be more than happy to share advice and you can get a few packets to get you started.”

As well as providing buns for tea, Miriam Turley of FCFCG with the support of the Big Lottery Fund has asked charity True Harvest Seeds to come along.

“Debbie Gillies and Mark Bryson will be explaining how to store your seeds to prolong their viability and will allow us to get up close and personal with some seeds under their microscope," said Miriam.

Holywood joins the blossoming national trend in local food growing and seed swap days.
